Hello everyone!
I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday season so far! I wanted to touch on something that as of yet not many people have thought of … at least not in the group of people I have been talking with. The holidays can be so bad for people in recovery, that it is sometimes called "The Bermuda Triangle" … meaning Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. One of the reasons it has so much bad press is that:
And on and on and on … there seems to be no end to the reasons why the holidays are going to be bad. But I have something for ye gentle reader to ponder; why does it have to be the same, or with certain people, or whatever for you to have a good time?! I remember having a little 2 foot Christmas tree, being along on Christmas, Not drinking on New Year's MANY MANY times, sharing a Thanksgiving meal with just me and my pet or one friend … and ALL of these were great holidays! Why? Because I MADE THEM THAT WAY! Folks you can either focus on what you have or what you don't have. What you want and can't get, or the options that are currently available! Being happy is a CHOICE, just like being unhappy. Make this holiday, YOUR holiday! Start new traditions! Do different things! Use the 'magic' of Christmas to make things the way you want. Go to school plays, enjoy Christmas musicals, partake in religious holiday services, feed the hungry, make Christmas cards for the elderly in assisted living homes … you will be amazed at how much better you feel and how happy the holiday season can actually be! Find the same holiday spirit that was in you when you were a kid, as it is still there, and fan that flame! As you do, you will by default allow and inspire others to do the same! Happy Holidays my friends! I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year! Chad
