Hello Sports Fans!
Here are some thoughts on why our mental health care specifically that of addiction or substance use disorder is so fucked up. There are TOO many "professionals" who THINK they know what to say that come from TOO many different educational paths! Think about it you have: counselors, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, case workers, peer support specialists, interns, and all the medical professionals to include doctors giving advice on what people should or shouldn't do. ALL of my degrees are in psychology, and ALL of my classes are based in psychology. History ... history of psychology, Scientific ... biological psychology, developmental psychology, Humanities ... cultural psychology, social psychology, child psychology ... and on and on for almost 50 straight up psychology, counseling, and addiction courses now. BUT ... my degree is rated just like the person who took underwater basket weaving and gym as their extra courses. I maintained a 4.0 but those that just barely passed are hired simply because they have a 'degree'. A 'degree' does not equal understanding nor does it equal a mastery of the field. Neither does a fucking 'license' as I've worked with some licensed professionals that were doing more harm than good and had an understanding of addiction just above that of a wet doormat. I'm not sure what the 'fix' is yet but seeing and treating all 'education' as and allowing other people with degrees that are 'close' to psychology to give advice about addiction or recovery is just fucking stupid. Case management and social workers should do just that ... and leave the therapy to those who have had more than 3 classes in how to deal with people. This is all my opinion and comes from my own biased perception. But when the shoe fits, lace that motherfucker up! Upward and onward my friends!
