Hello everyone,
If we are going to change how addiction is treated, we MUST learn to understand what addiction really is! Knowledge IS power people! This is YOUR issue. LEARN ABOUT IT!!
Hello everyone,
We in recovery need to take a very serious look at the amount and types of sugar we are eating; and not only for healthy reasons! Sugar plays on the same reward path as drugs did/do, therefore when we have 'sugar' cravings we are also stimulating the cravings for other things as well! And yes, the irony is that all 12-step recovery places have tons of sugar available! Take the time to look at your diet and see if there is any obvious sugar components that you can either just drop, or replace with a healthier more natural sugar like honey, or maple syrup, or natural fruits. Your brain, your body, and your recovery will be glad you did!
Hello everyone,
Anyone who has talked to me personally knows I am constantly talking about the benefits of eating good food. It's not just about what that good food does for your body, it's also about the choices and interactions that can happen while going to get that good food! If you have never been to one of your local farmers markets now is a good time to check them out; as they have just kicked off the season! Not only is the food they sell nice and fresh, and packed full of nutrition, but the people there (both famers and customers alike) are nice and friendly! In a world where it's a surprise to get a smile and a thank you at the grocery store; there as well as good conversation as well as friendships are common place at farmers markets. Do yourself, and the local economy a favor, and take the time to check them out! Hello everyone!
I want to try and explain how addiction might have come into your life with something we all should be a little more educated on ... love. So, has anyone ever heard of 'love at first sight'? What about someone you knew for a long time, and then just 'poof' one day your feelings changed for them! What makes you keep thinking about someone you KNOW is bad for you? Why do you go back and try to work things out with someone you left because the relationship was so bad, for so long? Have you ever skipped work, lied to your friends or family, or done crazy things that you wouldn't normally do ... for the love of your life? These questions, should show you in some way how our 'reward system' can be hijacked! We don't think clearly, rationally, or even correctly at times. We will lie, and make excuses to others (and ourselves) to keep them in our life. This is ONE part of addiction. The issue is there are a multitude of others to deal with as well. However, the next time you think ... "well I didn't choose this" remember that you didn't really "choose" who you feel in love with either ... your brain did that for you; and so it is with addiction! I hope this helps some! Chad
