Hello Sports Fans!
Today’s QUICK TIP … Just because you THINK IT or BELIEVE IT … doesn’t mean it’s actually TRUE! So there are probably 100 different variables that fall into play on this topic but I’ll narrow the field to THREE main points. 1) The first and foremost job of your brain is to PROTECT YOU … even at your own peril, in the long run, like taking drugs or drinking to numb the current pain 2) The main goal of your EGO is simply to be RIGHT about what it BELIEVES … even to your own detriment … this is why we selected certain things to pay attention to while ignoring others 3) This leads me to the second part COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS … which are simply thinking errors and we have LOTS of them! Like mindreading (you know what they must be thinking) and the all or nothing (like if you make one mistake you are a TOTAL screwup) and emotional reasoning (what you ‘feel’ MUST be true). KEY POINT … ALL OF THESE mean that your thoughts … aka your brain … can and normally does, lie to you ALL THE TIME! Here is a great read about some of the most common cognitive distortions and how they come about and what to do about them … enjoy "Here" Illegitimi non Carborundum!

“NOTHING IS OVER! NOTHING! YOU JUST DON’T TURN IT OFF! "Or at least that’s what Rambo said at the end of First Blood … but actually YOU CAN! The key to understanding how to gear down is found in understanding how the brain provides motivation to stay geared up for ANYTHING. Your Brain
Your FIVE Tips to get back into a relaxed ‘Flow’ after being high speed!
Hello Sports Fans!
Today’s QUICK TIP … Have you ever wanted to change something in a routine only to find it very difficult or even impossible? First, it’s important to understand that we spend between 90-95% of our day on auto-pilot mindlessly running along old and previously programmed ‘routines’. This is one of the reasons it is so difficult to make changes. So a way to make change easier is to SHATTER the old routine so you actually have to ‘think’ for a day or two before you log out and go back to auto-pilot. What I mean is ~ shake things up in ‘your world’, and the more the better. Do things like: 1. rearrange the bedroom or living room 2. fold some hanging clothes and hang some folded clothes while putting socks where the underwear was and vice versa. 3. put the plates where the glasses were and the glasses where the plates were and MOVE YOUR COFFEE CUP! 4. brush your teeth with your opposite hand 5. put on some clothes you haven’t worn in a while … listen to old music … call an old friend … 6. SHATTER YOUR ROUTINE! In doing so, you will make it 100x easier to ADD whatever you were wanting to add to your NEW routine and in a few days or weeks, the new routine will simply be part of your ‘updated’ automatic programming! Here is a QUICK TIP on How to better control a small portion of that! So there is this thing called PRIMING … which is basically cueing up the brain to pay attention to certain things. Like if I say RED … and then ask you to name a truck, you would be much more apt to say “fire truck” than if I didn’t say red first. There is much more to priming BUT as this is a quick tip I’ll get to the point. You can help PRIME YOUR DAY … by really trying to make the FIRST 10 MINUTES of your day GOOD ONES! It’s impossible to try and control your day, even those first 10 minutes BUT if you focus on trying to influence those first ten the best you can it will have a positive impact on the rest of your day! So play your favorite music, have your coffee ready, make sure you aren’t running late, have a good breakfast, do something to move your body, and try to positively engage your mind and watch your days become better all around! So while trying to avoid the great debate about what and why … let’s talk about something that is actually in YOUR influence … YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM! You can’t really increase your immune system as some people advocate but you CAN make sure it is running as close to 100% as possible. So, regardless of what you think about covid, there ARE some VERY effective things you can do to help YOU stay HEALTHY from not only covid but ALL the other wonderful “bugs” that are ALWAYS floating around IN and AROUND us … MOVE ~ your lymphatic system works much better when you are active AND your body simply works better with movement and exercise. This can be anything from a full workout to just walking around the park … and pretty much (like chocolate syrup on ice cream) the more regular the better! EAT YOUR VEGGIES ~ and your fruits and berries and your multivitamin and maybe even some extra vitamin c with some Zinc (which is HUGE for your immune system ~ anyone wanna take a guess at one of the main active ingredients in the wonderful cold & flu medication called “Zicam” is). GET YOUR REST ~ sleep, specific to healing and repair (which is what you are doing when you have a cold or flu) is more important than exercise and nutrition combined! What does an animal do when it’s sick … sleep, what do you feel like doing when you are sick … sleeping … what do most medications help you do … sleep … do you see a pattern? SUNLIGHT ~ natural sunlight is amazing for your body! It helps with body processes, mental function, and mood regulation. So even if you do it with social distancing in a park, get some natural sunlight on you! FOREST BATHING ~ being in nature is so good for you the Japanese have a word for “forest bathing!” Being around plants has been shown to do everything from drop stress, to improve mood, to improve your immune function! So get out there and hug that tree and thank it for helping to take care of you! STAY WARM ON PURPOSE ~ I like to call it, creating a fake fever (some people call it “sweating it out”) … try taking a hot bath, or stay wrapped up in a blanket or sleeping bag or use a sauna or even a steam room if you have access to one. It creates a rise in your core temperature (which is what a fever does) and helps to kill the ‘bugs’ in you! Just make sure you stay hydrated and replenish your lost fluids. LAUGH ~ they don’t say laughter is the best medicine for nothing. Laughing helps you to drop stress. Dropping stress helps your body recover and repair ANYTHING more efficiently. So put on some cartoons or some stand-up comedy (like some of our news channels or something similar) and enjoy some good ole belly laughs! BE AROUND GOOD PEOPLE ~ staying isolated is HORRIBLE for your mental health and therefore causes stress which is the OPPOSITE of what you want! So, even if you choose to do it virtually, (or 6 feet apart, which is how I’ve always preferred people I don’t know) CONNECT with people! … and maybe MOVE with them by walking in the SUN in the WOODS, and then go EAT good food with them and LAUGH, then RELAX with them while you hang out in a SAUNA or something lol (hey I’m trying here)! *** Note ~ hopefully you read some of this with some humor and sarcasm … see “laugh” as something that will help with the immune system … try not to take EVERYTHING so serious or personal. There are many more things you can do to help keep your own natural immune system (that is just so designed to help protect you from pesky viruses like covid) running at 100% but these are some of the top ones. So a question I get a lot is ~ how do I get more motivation to do or achieve “fill in the blank?” Maintaining motivation, as I currently understand it, is driven by THREE (3) main components 1) Intrinsic and extrinsic factors ~ meaning do YOU want to do it for you (reinforced by a personal ‘why’ that we can talk about later) or are you doing it because of some reward or punishment factor (like a paycheck)? The ‘key’ here can be found in the quote by Friedrich Nietzsche “he who has a why to live can bear almost any how” in that if your “why” for doing something is strong enough, the needed motivation will persist long-term. 2) Achievablility ~ very basically, do YOU believe that the effort you put into something will actually pay off? This ‘key’ can be exampled by the quote from Henry Ford “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right” as if you think you can’t, the idea of “why am I doing this” will come to mind, and BOTH factor 1 and 3 will begin to fail you as well. 3) What your brain thinks about the goal ~ which is a direct reflection of HOW you talk about whatever it is you are trying to achieve. You know what they say about your kids and how they mimic what you say and do, well your subconscious is 1000x worse! Your brain does EXACTLY what IT thinks you want to do. So if you ‘talk’ or ‘think’ negatively about what you are doing or trying to do or are wanting to do … your brain will drop all motivation to complete it and give you EVERY excuse in the world to stop … because that is what IT thinks you want to do. If you really want to stay motivated, you MUST talk about achieving your goal like it is your favorite and most amazing lover or life experience EVER! These three things (although there are other drivers) are the top ‘obstacles’ that most people get stuck on when I talk with people about why they are not achieving the things they want to achieve in life. You can normally ‘hear’ one of these three in the first minute or two of conversation with someone, so try really paying attention to how you talk, how you think, and your why about things … and you might just find WHY your motivation is lacking!
