Hello Sports Fans!
So a question I get a lot is ~ how do I get more motivation to do or achieve “fill in the blank?” Maintaining motivation, as I currently understand it, is driven by THREE (3) main components 1) Intrinsic and extrinsic factors ~ meaning do YOU want to do it for you (reinforced by a personal ‘why’ that we can talk about later) or are you doing it because of some reward or punishment factor (like a paycheck)? The ‘key’ here can be found in the quote by Friedrich Nietzsche “he who has a why to live can bear almost any how” in that if your “why” for doing something is strong enough, the needed motivation will persist long-term. 2) Achievablility ~ very basically, do YOU believe that the effort you put into something will actually pay off? This ‘key’ can be exampled by the quote from Henry Ford “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right” as if you think you can’t, the idea of “why am I doing this” will come to mind, and BOTH factor 1 and 3 will begin to fail you as well. 3) What your brain thinks about the goal ~ which is a direct reflection of HOW you talk about whatever it is you are trying to achieve. You know what they say about your kids and how they mimic what you say and do, well your subconscious is 1000x worse! Your brain does EXACTLY what IT thinks you want to do. So if you ‘talk’ or ‘think’ negatively about what you are doing or trying to do or are wanting to do … your brain will drop all motivation to complete it and give you EVERY excuse in the world to stop … because that is what IT thinks you want to do. If you really want to stay motivated, you MUST talk about achieving your goal like it is your favorite and most amazing lover or life experience EVER! These three things (although there are other drivers) are the top ‘obstacles’ that most people get stuck on when I talk with people about why they are not achieving the things they want to achieve in life. You can normally ‘hear’ one of these three in the first minute or two of conversation with someone, so try really paying attention to how you talk, how you think, and your why about things … and you might just find WHY your motivation is lacking! Illegitimi non Carborundum!
